Rob Van Winkle, professionally known as “Vanilla Ice” is undisputedly one of the largest names in music with numerous albums of multiple music genres. Most recognizable with the 1990 release of his multi-platinum album, “To The Extreme.”

Rob booked Power Station Studios to work on some upcoming music projects. From the moment Rob walks in the door, the energy in the room rises to “epic” levels. His persona is fun, upbeat, and full of energy. Without a doubt, he is one of the coolest and nicest celebrity artists we’ve had grace the studio doors. Always full of positive energy.

As part of his exciting energy, he comes with a handful of these cool-looking energy drinks bearing his name, “Vanilla Ice”. A new flavor from Joyburst.

Joyburst “Vanilla Ice” is available now at Costco and Walmart

Rob partnered with the natural energy drink brand, “Joyburst” to launch the signature flavor, “Vanilla Ice”. Designed by the legend himself, the drink has the aroma and taste of vanilla combined with the refreshing taste of chilled ice.

His excitement made all of us excited to have a taste and he warmingly obliged. All of us in the studio business is no stranger to energy drinks. As a matter of fact, we often times thrive on them to endure the long hours and need to always be on point!
The problem is that with many of these types of drinks, there are loads of calories, tons of sugar, and carbs, and sometimes include “suspect” ingredients to promote energy that usually comes to haunt us with the inevitable “crash.”

Joyburst is what they call themselves, “The Good-For-You Energy Drink” we’ve all been waiting for. This rings true as you start to read the label. “No Sugar”, “No Calories”, “Natural Caffeine”, and “Low Carbs”.

But does it taste good? YES! We were all excited to try the new drink we couldn’t wait to indulge. The smooth vanilla taste was awesome! You could feel an inspiring drive of energy and best of all, NO CRASH afterward!!!

During the session, I got to “chit-chat” about how he became involved with this project and how he was so “hands-on” with the final product. Understanding how Rob was in “his element”, being here in the recording studio, I suggested we take some photos with him and his new Vanilla Ice Joyburst while here in the studio. We were just having fun with this. I texted him the photos and thought nothing of it.

The release of his drink was this June 24th and when we did a quick online search to see how it was going.
We were excited and honored to see that Rob and Joyburst used our fun photo of him holding his new “Vanilla Ice Joyburst” right in our Studio A in front of the console.

This photo in our studio has been shot all over the internet. So far we’ve seen it on RollingStone.com, Yahoo! Entertainment, and more. So a big THANK YOU to Rob for using the pic!!!

While we can’t give the details of Rob’s recording production here at Power Station, we are happy to share this news! As a part of the launch of this new product, they have released an official new music video for this exciting product launch.

Vanilla Ice and Brad Woodgate – NEW OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO

Vanilla Ice and Joyburst CEO, Brad Woodgate “Joyburst” (UMG, on behalf of Anthem Records)

We wish Rob, Brad, and everyone at Joyburst all the luck with the Vanilla Ice drink and allowing us to have the “sneak-peek” samples! We will certainly be stocking the studio refrigerator with plenty!

On a personal note, we usually reserve these blogs to showcase our local artists in the Power Station community. However, it was how awesome Rob treated everyone in his session and how cool he was to everyone working on his project.

He not only shared his new product with the staff but before he left the studio, he made it a point to stop and thank every single person in that studio for helping on his recording project. I notice these things and this kindness isn’t always the case. I could tell by how effortless this simple act of kindness was that this was a part of who Rob Van Winkle is. A people person. This is why we wanted to show the same excitement and enthusiasm for this new product. But also, because we really fuc*ing like Joyburst!!!!

On Thursday, June 9th, renowned artist, Deborah Silver commissioned some of the best in the business to perform on her upcoming recording project produced and arranged by the legendary Charles Calello.

Proud to be a part of this amazing group of people to engineer the production were Power Station Studio’s own Paul Kronk and Rob Roy. Deborah Silver, who is a regular Power Station client and a warm part of our studio family asked if we would be the engineering team to come to Criteria Recording Studios in Miami to make this record the best-in-class sounding production ever!

Somce our Power Station Studios is so busy with our productions, we don’t typically do outside sessions. However, Criteria Studio’s extra-large Studio A live room gave this production the ability to record the entire production of trombones, trumpets, saxes, piano, upright bass, guitar, and drums all “Live” at the same time. There’s is something special when an entire big band orchestra is all performing together in the same room to record the tracks.

Being that Deborah is one of our great friends and having the legendary Charles Calello who also is a dear part of the Power Station family, no engineer in their right mind would pass on an opportunity to work on a project of this nature.

Power Station Studio’s Paul Kronk at the helm with Charles Calello in Criteria’ Studio A with Deborah Silver and her live Big Band session.

From setup to the downbeat, to the final note, this was a recording session straight out of a book of fairytales. Modern audio engineers only dream to be on studio dates such as this one. This dream begins with an amazing artist. Deborah Silver is not only an amazing singer and performer, she is a seasoned pro at the highest levels of the business. Not to mention, she is such a great artist to work with. Her positivity and energy keep the momentum moving in the most positive of ways.

Next, the sonic dream continues with amazing arrangements. Charles Calello’s discography includes more than 100 “Billboard Chart” records and more “Top 10” hits than any other arranger. With Charles as the producer, arranger, and conductor on this project, our Power Station engineering staff was honored to be chosen to be a part of the production team on this date.

The Brass section, Piano, Conductor’s Platform, and Vocal mic. Then off to the side is the Upright Bass.
(Drums and guitars behind the camera.)

“This has got one of the best sounding recordings I have ever done”

Charlie Calello listening to the tracks back the following day at Power Station Studios.

The setup went as smooth as silk. The funny part was that almost the entire Criteria staff found their way into the session to help. They had said that “These types of sessions don’t come into the studio very often and we had to just come to lend a hand just to see it all come together!” We were happy to include them in our fun!

The fun began at setup. This included making way for the 4 Trombones, 1 Tuba, 4 Trumpets, and 5 Saxes (with a quick cameo of a clarinet and a banjo)! We had a blast setting up the live brass section.

(For our techie followers:) We had actually brought a couple Coles 4038 ribbons from Power Station for the Trumpets. We prefer ribbons on trumpets and wanted to be sure that we had enough. Actually, the Criteria staff surprised us with a couple of vintage RCA 77s and 44s with we excitedly used.

For the Trombones, we used Neumann U47s and on the Saxes we used Neumann U87s. However, on the Bari Sax, we used one of our Coles 4038s with a little blast of 100Hz to make it punch!

For the piano, we used a spaced pair of Schoeps small diaphragm tube mics with the piano lid on the short stick. Along with a couple of blankets over the top, this would give us the amazing sound of the precisionaly tuned grand piano and minimize bleed into the brass section.

For the upright, we used a Neumann M149 tube along with a D/I through an Avalon U5 direct box.

Drums and acoustic guitar were set up using our typical Power Station mic layouts.

All these lines ran directly through Criteria’s SSL 9000J console and then direct to ProTools.

The final result was pure magic! Not just from the tech notes above, but because of all the people involved. Not just Deborah, Charles, and our Power Station team, but because of “ALL” the people involved and who added their time to make this session so great!

On that note, Paul and Rob want to give a special shout-out and thank you to Simon, Dominick, Cameron, and the rest of the Criteria staff for making this production one of the best sessions any of us have done in a long time.

Great music, Great process, and most importantly, GREAT PEOPLE! That was the secret of this date’s success.

Thank you Deborah for bringing such an amazing team of people together for such an awesome session!!!!

For the next stop on this awesome production, we take the tracks back to Power Station Studios and do some instrument overdubs. This will include some electric guitar, Hammond B3 organ, and some other sonic accouterments. Then we will record Deborah’s vocals (on our original Telefunken ELA M251).

Once this is all complete, we will mix this amazing creation on our Rupert Neve 9098i console. See Deborah’s links below to follow her and get an update on this release!!!

Tand brings the trust of their first studio album to Power Station Studios.

One figures that it is hard enough to write songs encompassing a worthy EP. Tand crossed that hurdle with leaps and bounds. We figure it was harder for them to narrow the selections as they are amazing writers and musicians. After songs are selected to be included in a future release, the next decision is, “Where to record?”

After much research and experience, the choice for Tand was apparent where they would put their sonic trust for this release, “Puzzle Piece”. Power Station was the place to go!

Truth be told, Power Station has a deep history with several of the members of Tand. For one, Tand drummer, Ali Nassar is a premier go-to for Power Station when hiring a session drummer. Ali’s power and impeccable timing are always a winning combination for any session. Also, guitarist Michael Garulli has recorded several records here at Power Station. Records from his own successful touring band “The Heavy Pets”.

Beyond the familiar sounds of Mike on guitar and vocals and Ali’s drums, The Tand sound is the masterful culminating of Daryl Wolff’s keys – A huge staple in bringing vibe and layers to the Tand sound. Rounded out with Peter’s melodic yet rock-solid bottom end, topped with Taylor’s guitars and vocals, This Tand EP is one not to miss!

The Band: “TAND”

Power Station was not only honored but humbled that Daryl, Taylor, Mike, Ali, and Peter put their faith into our studio to make this amazing release become the reality it so deserved.

Recorded and mixed by our Chief Engineer, Paul Kronk, and mastered by Calbi/Fallone at Sterling Sound, this is a sonic masterpiece you don’t want to pass up!
